Is AI actually going to take your job?

Actionable ways to not get left behind

As a power Twitter (X) user, I often forget that only 7% of the world is actually on the platform.

But when a post goes so viral that it leaves the platform and becomes discussion in group chats or in real life, you know it was a powerful one.

That’s what happened with Matt Shumer’s Article about AI this week

I’m not going to summarize the article for you, it’s worth the 10 minute read, but it’s also worth reading this response.

I’m sure linking 2, 10 minute reads is the worst way to optimize for newsletter readership but the point of this newsletter is to have people be informed.

The value of today’s newsletter: I will share actionable ways to embrace AI so you’re not left behind

If you forward this to one person who then signs up, you’ll be locked into the newsletter for free for the rest of your life.

What I thought the future would look like

Today’s Topic: Ways to actually use AI

Before I share a bunch of ways to actually embrace AI so you’re not left behind, I do want to share 2 anecdotes.

I’m connected to someone at a huge investment firm. A firm with 1,000 employees. This mid level employee spent the last 3 months building a model utilizing AI.

What did this result in?

The CEO of this investment firm flew him to NYC for a 1 on 1.

The model was able to do what any new investment analyst could do but better.

This big investment firm pulled 12 offers to new college grads because of it.

I’m also connected to a business owner who had a multi person engineering team.

After using Replit (one of the tools I’ll be recommending later), he let his engineering team go, hired an agency for approximately 10% of the cost to manage the code that he built on Replit.

Now, are there going to be new jobs because of this? IDK - according to Connor above, yes.

I’m a pretty optimistic person, yet, I think AI will actually cause mass displacement.

I’ve been saying this in my group chats which led to a discussion.

My friend asked me, what % will unemployment get to.

I said if I set the line at 18% how would he bet.

He retorted that he thought I was talking about 50% displacement.

To be clear, I think we could get to that level but I pointed out that 18% would be 12% more people than we currently have!

That’d be a pretty serious change.

And at that point I think he realized, well I better not get left behind…
